ASUU STRIKE: Universities To Reopen In January 2021 – Ngige

  The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, says  Academic Activities in Nigeria Universities will start in all Nigeria Universities by January 2021. He says the negotiations between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal government had reached 98 percent, adding that it remains only two percent to be completed.  He said this on Monday in Alor, Idemili South local government area of Anambra State, during the launch of Ngige free medical outreach at the Community’s Health Centre. Ngige said, “We have met about 98 percent of the request of ASUU. Some 5 to 2 percent is what you can call promissory notes. “So, I am very hopeful that by midnight today, there are some works we are supposed to get on to do. Why ASUU Is Still On Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has explained why lecturers are yet to call off their eight-month-old strike. Its leadership said the Federal Government has neither implemented nor fulfilled any of the offers it made to ASUU.  For instance, the union explained that the salaries of its members withheld by the government have not been paid despite the latest offer from the government negotiating team. The government, in its latest offers to ASUU leadership, pledged to pay N40 billion as Earned Allowance and N30 billion for the revitalisation of the university system, bringing the total payment to N70 billion.  The government also agreed to settle the arrears of salaries of the lecturers before December 2020, but after due consultation with the government side. ASUU-FG War: Return to Your Duty Post – Buhari Tells Striking Lecturers

  President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that the federal government would meet all agreements with unions in the educational sector.  Buhari gave the assurance while expressing concern over the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.  He appealed to the lecturers to return to their duty posts. The President spoke at the 2020 convocation and 72nd founding day celebration of the University of Ibadan, on Tuesday. President  Buhari was represented at the ocassion by the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abubakar Rasheed.
