Breaking WTO News: Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Makes History As First African, First Woman to Head WTO
The history:
The Twist:
The victory of President Joe Biden of America changed the whole game after former President Donald Trump disapproval. Last week the Joe Biden administration endorsed former Nigerian finance minister and World Bank chief, paving her way to the top notch job.
The former head of the WTO, Brazilian career diplomat Roberto Azevedo stepped down last August, a year ahead of schedule. The process of picking one of eight candidates to succeed him had been expected to wrap up by November, but the administration of former US president Donald Trump became a clog in the wheel to reach a consensus to appoint Okonjo-Iweala.Okonjo-Iweala has said her priorities include getting long-blocked trade talks on fishery subsidies across the finish line and breathing life back into WTO’s Appellate Body.
The pedigree of the new WTO DG gave the edge over other contenders. She is twice Nigeria’s finance minister (2003-2006 and 2011-2015) and she's also the first female foreign minister fir two-month in Nigeria.
