STARTING YEAR 2021 WITH WORKABLE SMART GOALS
It's often said that life is a journey! Would you set out on a major journey with no real idea of your destination? Probably no. Many people feel as if they're adrift in the world.
They work hard, but they don't seem to get anywhere worthwhile. A key reason they feel this way is that they haven't spent enough time thinking about what they want from life, and haven't set themselves formal goals. Goal is simply a written down decisions about what you want to achieve in life, business or venture.
HOW TO SET WORKABLE SMART GOALS
According to Professor Robert S. Rubin, who wrote about SMART in an article for The Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. He stated that SMART has come to mean different things to different people, as shown below:
SPECIFIC (simple, sensible, significant).
MEASURABLE (meaningful, motivating).
ACHIEVABLE (agreed, attainable).
RELEVANT (reasonable, realistic and resourced, results-based).
TIME BOUND (time-based, time limited, time/cost limited, timely, time-sensitive
SMART is an acronym that you can use in setting your goals.
Have you ever wondered why you work so hard, yet you feel you haven't made any achievement?
Maybe you see little improvement over the past 5 -10years you've been working and you felt you haven't encountered breakthrough.. WAIT! REFLECT! REVIEW! and think SMART!
...Many people spend their lives drifting from one job to another, or rushing around trying to get more done while actually accomplishing very little. Setting SMART goals means you can clarify your ideas, focus your efforts, use your time and resources productively, and increase your chances of achieving what you want in life. - Mind Tools
1. SPECIFIC
Your goal should be clear and specific, hence you will lose focus, drift and less motivated towards achieving it. Do you know why some businesses and plans fail? Have you ever found yourself jumping from one business to another? Today you're a make up artiste then few months later you have opened a clothing store and realising that the business isn't profitable like that of your friends you switched to fashion designing.. No! This isn't how success is achieved. There should be some consistency because every business have an underlining risk and threats.
When drafting your goal, ensure you answer this important 5W's question:
What do I want to accomplish?
Why is that goal(business) important?
Who is involved (consumers)?
Where is/will it be located?
Which resources or barriers are involved?
2. MEASURABLE
When your goal is measurable, assessing your progress will help you stay focused and meet your deadlines. As an undergraduate student, you measure your goal by the number of years your program of study will cover while staying focused to graduating with the best result.
This addresses the question:
How much or how long ?
How many?
How will I know when it's accomplished?
3. ACHIEVABLE
Always set a realistic and attainable goals. It should stretch your abilities yet attainable. For example, desiring to be the sought after real estate developer, you should begin to take on courses, find mentors on that field, undergo training and Serve to learn the ropes. An achievable goal addressed the question:
How can I accomplish this goal?
How realistic is the goal based on constraints example, financial factors?
4. RELEVANT
Do not join the train because others are doing so, but be on that train because it's leading you to a relevant destination. What I'm saying is that, make sure that your plans drives everyone forward while you retain control over them. You can't be a medical professional engaging in architectural work. It's irrelevant at this time because that will drift your focus. A relevant goal addresses the questions:
Is this the right time?
Does it seem worthwhile?
Is it applicable in the current socioeconomic environment?
5. TIME-BOUND
Remember that every goal has a target date. There are short term goals and long term goals..so that you would have a deadline to focus on something to work toward.
Example, as a childcare professional gaining a first aid CPR and AED certification will equip me with the skill necessary in the childcare industry as well as an opportunity to work with other professionals in other developed countries.
I enquired on the location and duration of the program to allow me plan appropriately to suit my schedule. It's important you give yourself a realistic time frame for achieving smaller goals that will be necessary to achieving your final objective.
Time- bound addresses the following questions:
When?
What can I do in six months from now?
What can I do in five weeks from now?
What can I do today?
Work hard! Think SMARTer!
For example in:
Business - What do you want to achieve in your business using SMART goals magic.
Career – What level do you want to reach in your career, or what do you want to achieve?
Finance – How much do you want to earn, by what stage? How is this related to your career goals?
Education – Is there any knowledge you want to acquire in particular? What information and skills will you need to have in order to achieve other goals?
Goal setting is an important method for:
Separating what's important from what's irrelevant, or a distraction.
Motivating yourself.
Building your self-confidence, based on successful achievement of goals.
*Set your lifetime goals first.
*Then, set a five-year plan of smaller goals that you need to complete if you are to reach your lifetime plan.
*You can even set one year goal to achieve the next big goal till you get there.
*Keep the process going by regularly reviewing and updating your goals. And remember to take time to enjoy the satisfaction of achieving your goals when you do so.
*If you haven't set any goals, do so, starting now. Who told you it's late. You can start it right now even on your phone as a draft. If you can't picture the future, you can't feature in it!
