In Defense of Nigeria: How Commanding Officer and His Men Died Despite Crushing ISWAP
In times of great peril, some individuals rise to exemplify unparalleled courage, leadership, and sacrifice. Lt. Col. T.E. Alari was one such remarkable figure—a resolute officer who stood as a defense against terror, sacrificing his life so that others could live in peace and safety.
On January 24, 2025, during a critical operation in the
Timbuktu Triangle—the last and only notorious hub of terrorist activity in
Damboa, Lt. Col. Alari once again demonstrated exemplary leadership. Under his
command, the 149 Battalion dismantled insurgent strongholds, neutralizing
numerous terrorists and forcing them into retreat. However, in a desperate
attempt to retaliate, ISWAP deployed a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive
Device (VBIED) against his troops.
Although his men destroyed the VBIED, the resulting
explosion tragically claimed the lives of those closest to the blast shrapnel,
including Lt. Col. Alari who always led from the front, exemplifying unwavering
courage even in the face of grave danger.
As the Commanding Officer of the 149 Battalion, Lt. Col.
Alari earned a formidable reputation among his enemies. His strategic expertise
and unrelenting determination struck devastating blows against both Boko Haram
and ISWAP, making him a nightmare for insurgents. Renowned for his fearless
approach, he consistently led from the front lines, inspiring confidence and
strength in his troops.
Lt. Col. Alari’s mere presence on the battlefield instilled
fear among terrorists and renewed courage among his men. His name became
synonymous with bravery and effective leadership. He was commended for
gallantry by the Nigerian Army under Late chief of the Army, General Lagbaja.
Officer Alari was more than a soldier; he was a dogged fighter,
defender, and patriot. His steadfast commitment to justice and his dedication
to his country's safety will be remembered as the hallmark of his service. His
selflessness shone brightly, as he consistently placed the welfare of his
troops and the mission above his own safety.
Outside the battlefield, he was a loving son, husband, and
father. While his family grieves of his irreparable loss, the enduring legacy
he leaves behind should encourage them —a legacy defined by valor, dedication,
and unyielding love for his nation.
As Nigeria mourns the loss of one of its finest military officers, the
nation must honor his memory by continuing the fight he so valiantly died for.
Lt. Col. T.E. Alari's ultimate sacrifice will not be forgotten, and his name
will forever be engraved in history as a hero who stood against terror and gave
everything for his country.
Rest in peace, gallant soldier.
